Chapter two

Riot

Room number seven held as much appeal these days as a screwdriver to the eye, but gettin’ laid was a must if I didn’t wanna eat somebody. Humans were smellin’ tasty, and holdin’ my lion in check got harder towards the end of the month.

Goin’ for a run didn’t help, so I’d booked the room again after my boss insisted. Greg was keen on keepin’ a low profile.

First rule of the Abyss Assassin: Never out yourself.

Killing someone not on my list would definitely out me.

Ozzi was never far away, and if I didn’t watch it, I’d be joinin’ his Ashes Club sooner rather than later. Ozzi had a whole collection of urns that surrounded the bar in his basement. People the goddess didn’t want reborn at any cost. There were four people who could ash a vessel and the Essence or Soul: Greg, the Collector, the Confessor, and me.

Greg had given me a blade called Soul Eater, that ate Souls and Essences. Even a prick from the razor-sharp edge would feed it. It melded to my left inner forearm like a black tattoo and tingled when there was trouble. If the hilt kissed my palm, then I had to remove the threat.

I stripped down, placed my clothes in the chair by the door, and made it to the bed. The scent of lemons blanketed the room as the air kicked on. The incense followed, letting me know the lights would go out in less than a minute. I chose lube from the bedside table drawer and leaned back against the headboard.

The lights went out, and the panel to my right slid open.

Mel entered, his blond hair slicked back from the shower, and his lips moved as he counted steps to the bed. He couldn’t see me, but I could see him.

I snagged him around the waist, tossed him to the bed, and scented him really well.

“Riot,” he whispered, his fingers tangling with my hair as he pulled my face to his.

He’d never seen me up close and personal, but he knew every inch of my skin intimately.

Keepin’ up with more than one lover was hard, even at my age. I preferred one at a time until they grew tired of the hide and seek.

Rina Dubois, who ran The Den, handpicked a flavor she thought I’d enjoy from the new ones when the old one had lost interest.

I paid a lot of money to keep others away from my lover, and the room belonged to me. I was their first lover until they decided to move on or mate.

He kissed me, urging my hand down. Ah. He preferred to bottom tonight.

When I rose up to grab the lube, he rolled to his knees and grabbed the bed rail. Hmm. No foreplay, no conversation. Our very first conversation defined the nature of our association, and this was the signal to end our sordid relationship.

He’d met his mate.

Part of me was angry, and I took that out on his ass, listening to him pant and beg me not to stop.
